A Jira alternative for teams using a tenth of Jira

Jira is deeper than Roomie and always will be. The question is whether your team uses that depth, or whether you are paying for a configuration engine to run a board with four columns - and paying separately for the mail, chat and support desk around it.

The short answer

Choose Jira if you rely on custom workflow schemes, JQL, fine-grained permissions or the wider Atlassian suite, or if your engineering org is large enough that the configuration is the point. Choose Roomie if your board is simpler than your licence suggests, if you want the customer email and the ticket in one place, or if you want an AI teammate that can act across the work rather than inside one tool.

Side by side

Where the two actually differ

Structural differences rather than feature checklists, because a feature list between a mature product and a young one is not a useful document.

Roomie
Jira
What you get
Boards, sprints, releases and ticket types, plus email, chat, CRM, support and a wiki.
Deep issue tracking, with the rest of the suite sold alongside it.
Setup
A board and a sprint in a few minutes. Opinionated defaults.
Highly configurable, which is the strength and the cost.
Where the context lives
The customer email behind a ticket is in the same system as the ticket.
In Jira Service Management, Confluence or a connected mail tool.
What an AI can reach
Tickets, mail, chat, CRM and the wiki, on one data model.
What Atlassian Intelligence and your connected apps expose.
Price
$2 per user per month (NPR 250). One tier, everything included.
Per user per month, tiered, with other suite products priced separately.
Self-hosting
Yes. $2,000 per instance per year, carrying 50–100 people.
Data Center exists, aimed at large deployments.
Maturity
Young. Eight paying companies, around 200 people.
Over twenty years old, the default in enterprise engineering.

Jira details checked October 2026. Their pricing and packaging change, so check their site for current figures before deciding on cost alone.

The context

The email that caused the ticket, in the same place as the ticket

Most tickets start somewhere else: a customer wrote in, someone raised it in chat, a deal needed something. In Roomie that origin is not a link, it is the same record. The ticket, the mail, the conversation and the client in the CRM all live together, so nobody has to reconstruct why a thing exists six weeks later.

  • A support conversation becomes a ticket without leaving the thread
  • Search runs across tickets, mail, chat, CRM and the wiki at once
  • Sprints, releases, labels and ticket types out of the box
AI that can see it all

A teammate that chases the sprint, not a chatbot in a sidebar

An AI teammate with the Project Manager role reads the board, flags what is blocked or overdue, suggests who should pick up unassigned work and nudges people on their tickets. It asks before it creates or assigns anything, and you decide which of those it may do alone.

  • Roles for project management, sales, marketing and assistance
  • Every permission is Off, Ask first, or On, set one at a time
  • Five things no teammate can ever do, including sending email
One price

The board, the inbox, the helpdesk and the wiki on one line

Roomie is $2 per user per month (NPR 250) on a single tier, and that includes the email, chat, CRM, customer support and wiki you would otherwise buy from three other vendors. Self-hosting is licensed per instance, so the cost per person falls as the team grows rather than rising.

  • No feature tiers above the one price
  • Free for the first three people, with no trial clock
  • Self-hosted licensed by capacity, not by headcount

Being fair about it

When Jira is the better choice

  • Depth of configuration. Workflow schemes, JQL, permission matrices, automation rules. If you use these, nothing we have will satisfy you.
  • The ecosystem. The Atlassian marketplace, Confluence, Bitbucket, and every consultancy that already knows your setup.
  • Scale. Jira runs engineering orgs of thousands. We have not been tested anywhere near that and will not claim otherwise.
  • Hiring. Every engineer you hire has used Jira. That familiarity is worth real money.

Questions

Roomie compared with Jira, answered

Is Roomie as powerful as Jira?

No. Jira has twenty years of workflow engine behind it: custom schemes, permission matrices, automation rules, JQL. If your team genuinely uses that depth, Roomie will feel thin and you should stay.

So who should actually switch?

Teams using a fraction of Jira and paying for all of it, especially ones that also pay for a separate mail host, chat tool and helpdesk. If your sprint board is a to-do list with statuses, you are buying an aircraft to cross a river.

What does Roomie do that Jira does not?

It keeps the work with the context. The customer email that caused a ticket, the chat thread where it was discussed, the deal in the CRM and the ticket itself are the same records, so an AI teammate can read the mail, find the ticket and update it in one move. In a connected setup that behaviour is only ever as good as the integration between two products.

Can we import our Jira issues?

There is an import in the tasks view, and for anything larger we will do the migration with you rather than hand you a CSV and wish you luck. Ask us before you commit to a date.

Can we run it on our own servers?

Yes. The licence is per instance rather than per seat, at $2,000 a year for a box carrying 50–100 people, which means the cost per person falls as you grow. Jira Data Center exists but is aimed at much larger deployments.

How big is Roomie?

Small, and we would rather say so. Eight companies pay for it today, around 200 people, across software, energy consulting, non-profits and consumer goods. Some run it on their own servers.
